Stakeholders:
As I am sure you are aware, the Workers’ Compensation Management-Labor Advisory
Committee (MLAC) has performed a great service for the State of Oregon, working over
the past several years to restore confidence in the MLAC process and in the workers’
compensation system.
I particularly appreciated the long hours they invested as the committee worked to
resolve the issues raised by the portions of the law which were due to sunset this past
legislative session. Their efforts resulted in the kinds of thoughtful recommendations
which both the legislature and I need to do our jobs well. The progress of the group has
also taught us a great deal about what we need to know and do to make the process
work even more effectively.
Given the importance of the work which must be done before the next legislative
session and the fact that many of the members’ terms of appointment expire during the
course of the interim, I have officially ended their term of service today. This will allow
us to structure an orderly transition to the next round of MLAC.
Let me be very clear, I view the work of MLAC as essential to thoughtful and effective
policy making in the workers’ compensation arena. I have full confidence in the
concept, the process and the people involved.
I intend to move forward as quickly as is prudent with new appointments to the
Committee and would encourage your input into that process through either Mark
Gibson, Mike Greenfield or Bill Braly.
Sincerely,
John A. Kitzhaber, M.D.
JOHN A. KITZHABER

STATE CAPITOL, SALEM 97310-0370 (503) 378-3111 FAX (503) 378-4863 TDD (503) 378-4859
